A lot can be told from how a manager conducts himself with the press and today was no exception. Roy Hodgson has never been known for managing his players in the dressing room. However, he had a staunch reputation for holding his own with the brutal English media. Kenny Dalglish does as well.
Hodgson's horrendous handling of Liverpool players this season has been well-publicized, this we know. The on-field and off-field results of this have shown vividly after the performance today, despite the result. But one quote in Kenny's press conference today caught my eye. First, let's flash back to Roy's regime. Seems so long ago, no?
"All he needs is a couple of goals or a couple of good performances and you will see the Fernando Torres of old."
-Roy Hodgson, December 27th 2010
Now let's return to the present. After today's loss to Manchester United, Kenny had this to say about the performance of Liverpool's No. 9.
"We couldn't have got any more from Fernando in terms of effort and commitment. He ran himself into the ground. It's a great sign he's determined to get himself back and silence any critics he's got. He did everything that was expected of him on the day."
-Kenny Dalglish, January 9th 2011
A bit different, I must say. Did Roy think that Fernando would enjoy his manager basically saying he is not who he used to be? His own manager? No. Kenny on the other hand, said the exact opposite. The striker worked his Spanish ass off today, but a goal would not come. That does not mean that he had a bad match. Strikers need service. Without it, it is very hard to put the ball in the back of a net for a striker. So here's hoping that Torres was not too affected by the comments of his beleaguered ex-manager. Kenny is the right man for this job and it is quite clear that he is aiming to get Torres the service and the results that he rightfully deserves. This should be fun.
