In watching the team over the past few weeks, something dawned on me about set pieces and who will be taking them when Steven Gerrard returns next season. Now, I would say even before he missed this time, I already thought he was at best the fourth best corner taker on the squad. It's just not something he's all that good at, yet no one on the team has had the nerve to go over and take the kick away from him. I'd love to see Meireles or Suarez or Aurielo(?) taking corners next year and having Stevie either in the box or 25 yards out looking to smash anything that bounces out of the box.
And then there's spot kicks. Flat out, Dirk Kuyt is better penalty taker than Gerrard. Yet, if Stevie is in the game, we know who is taking that penalty. Despite the fact that Dirk has a 100% penalty record and inspires nothing but confidence when he steps to the spot, we know he will defer to Gerrard, who is a capable, yet not great penalty taker.
As for free kicks, he still may well be the best option. Honestly, I don't have a strong feeling on that either way. But I think it would show leadership for the captain to defer to the guys best suited for the other duties next season.
