Liverpool v Bolton Player Ratings
First of all, sorry I am very late on these. It was a busy weekend. I wish I hadn't watched though. That was a more disjointed performance than a Sunday pub league. I just don't get it. They all looked like this was their first game together. So much for 4th. Now the question is, if we can't get 4th, do we want a Europa spot? I'm really not sure. I really want to see Gerrard and Bellamy playing off each other just as Rafa did with Gerrard and Torres.
On another note, Kevin Friend has reaffirmed my feelings that he is one of the most clueless referees in the EPL with a number of just odd decisions. I wish had laid $10 down on Bolton winning by two. That was likely quite a nice payout.
The awful ratings after the jump:
STARTERS:
Reina - 6 - Nothing he could do for the goals. His defense was awful in front of him and he pulled out a fantastic save on Petrov (I think) off a free kick.
Johnson - 5 - If he isn't supporting the attack, then we have nothing. That was clearly evident today as he did not get forward at all. When he did, it broke down very quickly.
Agger - 5 - Partly at fault for the third goal. Did hit the woodwork, who seems to be playing in defense where ever Liverpool go. Woodwork must have an exemption to be traded outside the transfer window.
Skrtel - 5 - At fault for the first as he just flat out failed to track the run. That left Hendo trying to play catch up. To be fair, it was poor from the midfield to allow the whole thing to happen. Everyone in the back seemed at fault for the second.
Enrique - 5 - A very shaky first half that almost saw him gift a few to Bolton. He also struggled in defense, almost as if he had slept through his alarm or something. See Johnson for the rest.
Maxi - 4 - Very poor game from Maxi, poor touches, poor shots and poor decisions.
Henderson - 6 - He worked hard, and had a few good touches. He still isn't there, but does seem to be developing, albeit very slowly. This was a Kuyt-like performance from him.
Adam - 4 - Very very poor. A 4 might be a bit generous. He was constantly fouling, his passes were off, he was routinely in a bad position to support the player with the ball. This was just a very bad game for him and probably his worst in a red shirt. I hope to God that he has now got it out of the way although I'm not convinced of that.
Gerrard - 6 - Worked his socks off and was left frustrated by poor interlinking play with his teammates. He has a few beautiful passes that didn't come off and made some great runs. He did everything a man can do to try to get his team going, but this Liverpool side was having none of it.
Bellamy - 7 - Very well taken goal from a great flick by Carroll. He was the only constant thorn in Bolton's side, as evidenced by Reo-Coker's recent comments. He hustled on both sides of the pitch, but it was all for not. Let's just hope his knees hold up because I think we are going to need him.
Carroll - 5 - Overall, poor. Sure, the flick to Bellamy was a thing of beauty, but footy is a 90 minute affair. He is still not using his size to shield the ball and once beaten to a 50/50, he gives up. He went absent for much of the second half. It can be argued that he didn't get much service and that is a fair point, but after watching this game I'm beginning to wonder if he has trouble judging crosses. There were way too many that he simply just ran under. One particularly that I remember was a long looping cross from Hendo in the first where he found him self a good 5-7 yards from where he needed to be, but made no effort to track backwards and challenge for it. His touch also seems to nearly always cause the ball to pop up, making link up plays and one-twos very difficult. Again though, he cannot be put up top alone. Kenny, do you hear me? Please stop doing that.
SUBS:
Downing - 5 - Added nothing.
Kuyt - 5 - Added a few offsides to the stats column. Other than that, added nothing.

I think you may be on to something with Carroll
He does seem to have a hard time judging the timing of incoming balls (that sounds a little… off when read out of context). I wonder if it’d be worthwhile to get the kid an appointment with a good eye doctor.

Gets my vote. Kidding.
Check out the article from Noel at the offside. After reading this and watching the replay it is evidently clear that we need Lucas or Wee Man back. Blame for the three goals cannot be pegged on the defense. The lack of a holding MF reared its ugly head against Bolton.

Can we please sign someone this window? I am thinking that it might not be a sexy signing but a DMF would be nice.
Europa...
… Why we wouldn’t we? If we want to prioritize the league we still can and it’ll just give us some more opportunities to bleed the kids. I know I’d like to see Sterling, Coates, Shelvey, and others like them in action more than I’ve been able to so far.
But it doesn’t look like this team is capable of 5th anyway.
I'm not sure they would be used though
Unfortunately they have been used far to sparingly already this season, nothing leads me to believe that would change. So I guess, if they aren’t going to be used, would you still want Europa League football?

Why wouldn't you use them? ...
if priority is placed on the league, then you want to rest starters on Thursday nights. And as said below, we seem to be stockpiling all these young talents. So why not let them get their feet wet, against quality competition, where you can accomplish a multitude of goals-getting them experience, seeing who is worth a shot in the first team, having sharp replacements should injuries strike, etc, if you acknowledge that winning it is irrelevant to finishing in the top 4 in the EPL and to the development of the kids.
I wouldn’t have expected them to be used extensively this season because a priority was placed on making a top 4 finish, which means play the best every time out. And also, we haven’t really had a big glut of games to where your first choices are tired and need rest (injured, yes, but not tired).

I would have expected them to be used this season
If top 4 was the priority then I would have thought for sure we would have seen more of them during the FA and Carling Cup matches. Instead, we have seen the first team for nearly every game. There is nothing in my mind that makes me think that would change if we were in Europa. I think Kenny deep down inside just wants silverware no matter what it is.

In what games would you use them?
As you say, we wanted silverware, and also didn’t want an early exit. That accounts for maybe the first game of the FA and Caling Cups. Other than that, we’ve been up against top sides in the rest of those matches, plus the obvious desire for every point possible (failed) in league matches. I just don’t see much of a chance to get those guys on the pitch. Also, they are still relatively young having spent much of their time last year on u18s instead of reserves. I’d think next year would be a lot easier to get them runs in Europa, as well as one of the two domestic cups, especially if we can sneak out a victory in either cup so the desire for silverware isn’t as strong.

I don't disagree
I would love to see it, but I am not necessarily convinced it would happen. And if they are only going to get one, maybe two games then is it worth it? I don’t know. Any experience is good experience I suppose.
We had three games that were against “lesser” opposition: Exeter, Oldham and Brighton. There was a great opportunity to rest some senior players and give the youngsters a run out and it didn’t happen. Suarez’s suspension may have been a blessing in disguise as he has been worked harder than a prostitute in Amsterdam over the last year. In addition, Flannigan was great last year and could easily give a rest to Enrique every once in a while and the same for Kelly, but that isn’t happening and these are player who did pretty much break into the first team. That is why I just am not convinced that it would actually happen.
Don’t take this the wrong way, I definitely would like to see it. I 100% agree with you guys on that.

Good points...
especially on Flanno, and Kelly.
Personally, if I was setting the lineups, the kids would get every group game in Europa, if we got there. And the older/more fragile/least replaceable of the first 11 don’t see a pitch in it until/unless we made it to the knockout stages (such as Agger, Gerrard, Lucas, Suarez).

To add, ...
I’ve been disappointed we haven’t seen more of Flanagan or Robinson this season. Or Kelly for that matter as well as he played last year and this year. We have not used any of the minimal depth we have. You’ve got me sold, even if we could/should rest first options in these type games, I don’t think we would.

Agreed. I would like to see a blend of first teammers and youth in the Europa should we qualify.
That way we field a fairly strong team to compete but also give the youngsters a run. For example instead of Luis playing let Suso get a run. He has got to be better than AC. Rest Lucas with Connor Coady or Spearing, Let Raheem get a run on the wing, take out Hendo or whomever is playing out wide.
I was glad we missed Europa this year so we could focus on the league.
I think the reason Kenny does not give the kids a run are due to a few reasons:
A) John Henry said that anything less than 4th and this season would be considered a disappointment
2) Media would go ape shit and say that we gave up on the season.
D) Kenny has shown blind love to Charlie Adam (am glad he did not do the same with Carra)
But that doesn't explain their exclusion from the other competitions
We have put out a first choice squad for nearly every one of those games including the Carling Cup at Exeter. If he wouldn’t play them for that game, then I don’t see him using them in any European competition.
"The trouble with referees is that they know the rules, but they don't know the game" -Bill Shankly
Agreed...
if you want to give starters a run out, you can. If you want to rest them, it’s a great opportunity for the stockpiling of young talent to prove themselves in Wisdom, Flannagan, Robinson, Coates, Wilson, Shelvey, Coady, Spearing, Sterling, Suso, Morgan, Ngoo, etc, etc, etc.

You guys are correct.
Don’t you have to name a european competition roster? If so can you name reserves on it?
No sweat...
… I just don’t see any downside. Kenny would have to play some of the youth, as not many players can play every fixture. It would also provide opportunities for squad players to stay sharp, so that when they’re called on they’ll be able to respond. Whether that happened in Europa or Cup ties I don’t really care. I think League position will always be the top priority, excepting late rounds in the Champions’ League. But we have a big squad with a lot of youth. We have to give them opportunities somehow.
More importantly, I want LFC to compete in as many competitions as possible. I just don’t see any downside to it at all.
