Cry Wolves: Wolverhampton 0 - Liverpool 3

Attalad

In a game where both teams decided they would pretty much go without a midfield, Liverpool shook off what looked to be an all too familiar first half -- decent chances and possession, a missed penalty call, no goals -- and then torched their opponent's overexuberance in the second half. It came out to be a an easy victory over the second 45, something we haven't experienced in far too long. We're not used to seeing Liverpool be ruthless and efficient, but dear lord is it welcome.

It was always going to be something less than a vintage performance. The exertions of the past week saw to that, and it was just a matter of could Liverpool find enough to get a result and move on. They did, and that's something they haven't done in....well, the memory fails me.

-I don't think there's a sport where confidence matters more than football. You can just seen when a player is fighting it and hiding, and when he's feeling it and willing to be counted. So it looks with Andy Carroll. While it won't go in the overly dominating, example setting performance for a striker, it is far better than we have seen from the #9 and hopefully is a first step. His contribution on Saturday, his play then clearly sparked something in him. He was lively, battling, and frankly Wolves didn't have much of an answer. Whoever the color guy was, his name escapes me (memory down two now) said that Carroll was doing what he does -- which granted isn't all we'd like but he wasn't getting the response from his teammates. There were a lot of knock downs and headers that were put where they should be. Maybe his teammates were just in shock that they were and didn't react properly in time. But his goal was very well taken, and from there you could see the belief oozing from him. There was one turn at the halfway line later, that sadly led to a blasted shot well wide, but it was something he wouldn't have tried even a week ago.

Now Liverpool have a question. Kuyt appears to be back on form, and Bellamy has pretty much become indispensable. Luis Suarez's banishment to the hinterlands is over, how do they all fit? It is unlikely that they would ever field a straight up 4-2-4. Do they try Suarez and Carroll together again? The 4-3-3 with a front line of Suarez-Carroll-Bellamy that's really only been trotted out, and quickly discarded, at Fulham? Do they put Carroll back on the bench and erode the confidence that took far too long to find?

I don't have any of those answers.

-After going down one, Wolves were just far too desperate, which made picking them off that much easier. While they are in real trouble and going behind probably engineers panic at the thought of more points escaping their grasp and causing them to fall into the Championship, it was only a one goal lead and didn't require the crying of "Havoc!" and sending everyone forward. That said, Liverpool's counter attacking was superb at times.

-A perfect Charlie Adam game. Some blissful passes, and some Python-esque tackling and marking.

-When Jay Spearing calmed down in the second half, or maybe just realized his main job was to cover for Adam, he had a pretty strong match.

-So much for Jose Enrique's dip in form, no?

-Mick McCarthy may want to get familiar with Monster.com. Is that what unemployed people still use?

And with that, Liverpool vault up to 5th, depending on what Arsenal and Newcastle do tomorrow. No matter those results, thanks to a Chelsea stubbing of their toe at Swansea, Liverpool are only four points out of fourth with both the Russian play thing and the Gunners still to come to Anfield. Despite their best efforts, Liverpool are very much still in the chase for fourth, though with a nasty looking run of matches to come.

Didn't get to watch the game

Is there anyplace to go to watch a replay of it, where you don’t have to pay a subscription?

Highlights, maybe

A full free replay, I doubt it. Hopefully someone proves me wrong.

will probably get the highlights out by tomorrow morning, so I will catch those tomorrow. No worries.

You could join Liverpool's online video thing.

It is £2.99 a month for the first 3 months and the £4.99 after. That’s what I have. I realize that isn’t free, but it isn’t too expensive if you use it enough, plus they air live all reserve matches as well.

I will probably do that

at some point, maybe when tax refunds come in. Trying to save money at the moment, but I really do want to be able to watch the games too, so I might just have to bite the bullet.

just bare in mind that LFCtv does not show the games live

and their is this weird delay before they release the video in the US and other places outside of th UK still awesome but not what you want if you are looking for live games

Good point

They do however also have archives of every game for the last decade so if you get a hankering for some Istanbul, you can watch it on demand.

The other thing I hate is that you pretty much have to see the score to watch a game. So if your DVR screws up and you want to watch it, you’ll likely know the outcome before you watch.

If you're just looking for highlights, the EPL Review Show will be on FSC tomorrow night.

It usually runs on Sunday nights, but will be on tomorrow night since the matches were on Tuesday/Wednesday this round.

You know too many strikers is not really a problem

Considering a week ago or really at any point this season we were crying for one quality striker. So yeah good problem to have.

They sure are lucky they won this game to take the attention away from the fact that Liverpool bought absolutely no one in the transfer window. No way they finish in the top 4. Their chances were slim before and now they might as well be at 0% considering they are relying on a pretty pathetic crop of first team players.

Oh, I sure can’t wait until the summer when Liverpool go out and buy a bunch of overpriced British players that are predictably disappointing…again. Then again, what other choice will they have? No elite player is going to want to sign for Liverpool, who will be absent from Europe again.

Completely flabbergasted that they brought in no offensive help. Just mind boggling.

I'm going to assume that you're intentionally bad mouthing Liverpool in the hopes of being pleasantly surprised.

If we beat Cardiff at the end of the month, we’re in Europe. I will be shocked if we lose to them.

Europa is not Europe

Top players want Champion’s League ball, not the consolation prize. I think it would be different if Europa was still the old Cup Winner’s Cup competition where teams from the CL didn’t get dumped into it for not being good enough in the CL halfway through. I think Europa would still hold some prestige then.

As for Mitchell’s comments, I think it will be very close. Suarez will be back so that is a huge boost which will feel like a January signing, but I am not convinced either that this squad is quite good enough to finish top four in this year’s league.

4th

If 4th is attainable, we will need NUFC, CFC, or ARSE to help us. A meltdown by anyone of these teams would really be nice.

I have to admit the first 45 minutes yesterday scared me a little bit. I thought that we were going to revert into our shell.

Luis will provide a boost. But we do have a tough PL stretch to get through.

THS
at MUFC
Arsenal

Europa will be good to get some of the youngesters some first team action. I could care less about winning the Europa league next year. If we fail to make 4th, it should still be the goal next season.

by NC Nole on Feb 1, 2012 9:05 PM GMT up reply actions

I agree with you guys about Luis, obviously. But, let’s remember that it’s not like he was scoring much before being suspended. He has a mere 5 goals for the season in the PL. I know that his affect on the team isn’t just the number of goals he has scored but even when he is in the lineup, they still struggle to score. Add in the fact that Suarez and Carroll aren’t effective together, I just don’t understand why LFC wouldn’t bring in at least a striker to provide a different option (that isn’t Dirk Kuyt or Craig Bellamy, neither of whom are ideal).

A fair point about Luis

Perhaps this break will get him back on scoring track though. I also wish we had bought a striker, but I understand why they didn’t. It is probably because the value isn’t there.
I wish we would play Bellamy with Suarez or Kuyt with Suarez more often though. It seems like that would be a more natural pairing.

Bellamy with Suarez or Carroll seems our best option

or hopefully, Carroll’s recent run of form shows he’s coming around, and pick your poison of a big battering ram or surgical knife can start working well together, where Bellamy can go back to being a super sub giving 30 minutes or so of balls to the wall pressure at the end of games.

by Mr. Sanchez on Feb 2, 2012 12:41 AM GMT up reply actions

I have no doubt that this break will end up being a good thing for Luis. With all the football he’s played, he needed a break. He looked to be tiring before his suspension and this period of rest will hopefully bring him back energized and rearing to go.

Also, I think your second point emphasizes what I have been saying about bring in a new signing. We see how Bellamy and Suarez are much more naturally suited to play together. If they could, I’d want to see Bellamy and Suarez partnering up top with Gerrard sitting in the hole behind them. But, with Bellamy’s knee problems, that isn’t a possibility. As I said in my comment below, all I wanted was for Liverpool to snag a quick striker who can link up with Suarez to provide Kenny another option when he can’t start Bellars. It didn’t have to be a signing that broke the bank, just a player more naturally suited to partner with Suarez. I am sure they could have found someone which is why I’m am so frustrated.

Cisse was only 4m

I wouldn’t have minded having him back. Hell, he scored yesterday in his QPR debut. He loves the club still and his haircuts always gave me something to look forward to.

I agree with you about wanting a striker.

We seem to be getting hot at the right time though

and with all the new signings, they may just now getting comfortable together. Plus, if Gerrard can stay healthy from here on out (huge if, I know) that can make another huge difference. And aside from the trip to Old Trafford, the rest of the tough games are at home (Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton) and there’s a chance to really load up on points in April.

No, I’m intentionally bad mouthing them because that is how I honestly feel. My frustration level with this team is constantly rising. They failed quite miserably to bring in quality players which, obviously explains why we sitting on the outside of the top 4 looking in and struggle mightily to score. What excuse do that have not to bring a few more players in as reinforcements? You’d think that a big club like Liverpool FC would see that they are last in the PL in scoring and do something to address the problem. You’d think.

I’ll be shocked if they qualify for the Champions League. And if they don’t, this season is a failure. Don’t get me wrong, I want to win both the FA and Carling Cups, but winning those aren’t going to entice the elite players to come and play at Anfield next season.

Transfer market

Was shitty all around. Seriously look at the “big name” moves. It was not just us. A lot of that had to do with Europe 2012. Players that are settled with clubs don’t want to switch in the middle of a season, they want their national spot sealed up. Go to a new team and don’t mesh and don’t get any playing time…..look at Fernando Torres, think he will be starting for Spain this summer?

by NC Nole on Feb 1, 2012 9:08 PM GMT up reply actions

I don’t buy that. There are a lot of players out there. I’m of the opinion that qualifying for Champions League is hugely important if this team is going to rise to the top of the PL. A club like Liverpool should be able to pull something off and get some offensive help so they aren’t stuck floundering in the second half of the season like they were throughout the entire first half.

Telling you, Euro 2012 has an effect on the market we were in for. We were never in the running for Cavanis, Hazards, etc. They want CL football. I cannot blame them.

Look at the transfers overall. There were no big time moves.

by NC Nole on Feb 1, 2012 9:47 PM GMT up reply actions

I understand and I don’t think you are wrong. But I don’t buy that excuse. I don’t think a huge name was necessary and I don’t think it is asking to much for Liverpool to have bought a “Bellamy type player” who is quick and can link up with Suarez. It didn’t have to be someone of the Edison Cavani (although he is the biggest reason I think we need to qualify for UCL. He has interest is playing with Suarez and obviously, the both of them together would be dynamite. I want him at Anfield this summer) stature but just another striker option that isn’t Andy Carroll.

I’m sure it wouldn’t have been easy but it also wouldn’t have been impossible. Not bringing in someone to help Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard score could be the difference between qualifying for the Champions League and being left out of Europe again. Desperate times call for desperate measures and Liverpool desperately need to qualify for UCL next season which I just don’t see happening with this group of player’s inability to score.

Whether we like it or not

they are clearly committed to Carroll, and aren’t ready to add someone that will force him further down the depth chart. It’s why instead of a striker, I kept saying we needed to add a winger, particularly from the right side, to balance Downing and keep him on his clearly more comfortable left.

by Mr. Sanchez on Feb 2, 2012 5:43 PM GMT up reply actions

Sadly, I think you are right. LFC are going to try and jam that square peg into a round hole and keep claiming that AC is just around the corner from coming good.

I would definitely be interested to see if Downing could improve and play at a consistently high level on the left. Another winger to provide service to Carroll would definitely be high on my priorities list, especially if it is going to actually make Downing somewhat effective lol.

Downing has been pretty effective to my eyes

when he stays on the left. It’s when he shifts to the right that he becomes a non-factor. And I can’t blame them on Carroll. Let him get a little more run, improve his form, and keep his value somewhat high (never as high as we paid, but higher than it would be if we left him on the bench or banished him to nothing more than reserve games), and if we don’t think it’s a good fit, sell him for the most we can get this summer before buying a better partner for Suarez. Hopefully, his recent improvements can be sustained. Doubtful, but hopefully.

Not sure it would matter...

… One thing we’ve learned is that it can take awhile for new players to integrate into an existing system. Arguably none of our purchases over the past year really have. That may be an issue with the coaching or the players themselves, but every single one of our buys played better before they got here than after (barring Enrique, I guess).

There’s been a lot of turnover in the squad, a lot of injuries too, and a lot of the players we’ve brought in have been very young. It might be too much to ask for them to perform at a top level in the first six months.

Remember all the trouble MUFC had for a few years after going on that spending spree? After a major rebuild it can take a year or more for things to come together.

by kindred on Feb 1, 2012 10:40 PM GMT up reply actions

I would argue that when both Suarez and Enrique joined the team, they gelled pretty quickly and have done nicely (and from the limited amount that we have seen Sebastian Coates. I have been very impressed. He has been very solid). Players do need time to get comfortable playing for a new team. However, as much as I like Liverpool’s approach to building for the future, there has to be a balance between future planning and good results now. I am more lenient about giving some of the signings time to adjust for various reasons (i.e Jordan Henderson) but am not willing to do the same for others. Obviously, I am talking about Stewart Downing. I don’t buy that he needs time to adjust to a new system. He has played in the PL for a number of years as well as playing for the National team. Simply, considering how much it cost us to buy him and his many years of PL experience, he has been a horrible signing and I am in no way willing to cut him a break for not establishing himself as the first choice winger. So, I think I partially agree with you. It’s a mixed bag. You can use that excuse for some of the players, but it doesn’t work for others.

I guess the real question is, how do we evaluate this season. Half way through the season, we have seen the best and worst from this Liverpool team. What do we consider a success and what do we consider a failure? If we think that this team needs time to get used to playing together in Kenny’s system, then finishing outside the top 4 isn’t a big deal and we expect them to do it next season. That is not the side of the fence I fall on however. I expect this team to qualify for the Champions League. Anything less is a failure. We don’t have the bottomless purse that MCFC had (or has) so couple that with not qualifying Champions League, we are going to get stuck buying the Stewart Downing’s, Charlie Adams’ and Andy Carroll’s of the footballing world this summer, instead of opening the door to signing the players that will actually be difference makers.

I just don’t buy the excuses for not picking up a reinforcement striker before January ended. Like I’ve said, I don’t think it was asking that much from Liverpool and is why I am very disappointed.
