Jan 31 Man Of The Match - Andy Carroll

We know you're honored, Andy

While your suggestions are all going to be employed, and thanks for making them, of course we'll start with something I thought of. Because that's just how I roll.

Anyway, I thought it would be fun to take the player you voted man of the match from every game and study his performance through the chalkboards (sadly we can only do this in the league, but whatever). For Tuesday's match, you rightly selected Andy Carroll. After some perusing, here was the most interesting thing I found, his tackling:

by Guardian Chalkboards

To me, this shows a higher level of effort from Carroll than we've seen, and also what he's been maligned for. It's more of a shift put in than Luis Suarez in his last three matches before the ban. Now, I'm not trying to make the argument that Carroll is the dervish that Suarez is, or anything even close. But just trying to illustrate Carroll's upped effort level. No, he didn't win them all, but strikers rarely do.

The worrying thing, or something to keep an eye on, is his positioning. You'll notice how many of those tackles come around the center circle, and check out his heat map on his passing.

It's only one match, but Carroll isn't spending that much time near the box. It makes me wonder if he can really spearhead a 4-2-3-1 formation or a 4-3-3 if he's going to be floating between the halfway line and 18-yard box this much. Or is he going to need a partner at all times to get ahead of him? Can Liverpool provide wingers or withdrawn forwards who can get beyond him enough? Suarez and Bellamy would be the perfect candidates, but we've seen that not work before.

I would assume that the inflated pass number around the center circle could be the consequence of winning headers from goal kicks. Tackles may be related to that as well.

For me if Andy is going to get forward from a goal kick it will be hard. Head the ball to an oncoming player. Land and start sprinting toward the box. Pray that the cross works out. Sometimes it works but it sure is asking for a good bit of running out of Andy

If you hover over the spots

they say “aerial” or “take on”. Only one says take on, so I assume the rest were all winning headers.

This is awesome!

I had been racking my brain for sometime to figure out how to use the MoM results. This is perfect. I guess I will start closing the polls a few days after the game instead of leaving them open for a month so that we have a definite winner. Let me know how you want to work that Sam.

Just leave 'em open for a day or two

Generally, they way they start is how they finish. Except for that whole Jay Spearing constituency that loves to come in late down the lane.

Not sure

…that AC can cover enough ground to be alone up top, but as a fellow lumbering giant I hope he continues to play well. It will be interesting to see what the lineup is for spurs… this could be the first time we see Suarez, AC and Gerrard start together.

I'd like to see

Reina (of course)
Johnson Agger Skrtel Enrique (of course)
Kuyt Gerrard Henderson Downing
Carroll and Suarez up top (with Bellamy coming on at say the 60 minute mark for Suarez as he regains match fitness, or Carroll if he’s fallen back in form)

I’d personally rather see Kelly at RB and Johnson at RM, but that’s not gonna happen, so let Kuyt work the right since he helps cover Johnson when he makes runs in attack. We really, really need to add someone for the right wing.

Remember that move...

… against one of the Manchesters, I believe United, where Carroll controlled a clearance from Reina and flipped it into the path of the on-rushing Gerrard who then ended up with a look at goal? It was a thing of beauty, as was his flick-on for one of Bellamy’s goals.

That’s what Carroll’s role is on the break, or in initiating the attack, particularly in the 4-2-3-1. While he’s not quick enough to run behind defenders most of the time, he can release others who are. But for that to work you need two things: 1. Carroll’s touch to not be terrible; 2. Someone making the run from midfield. Both have been lacking at times.

He’s only going to be in the box when play develops more slowly down the flanks.

I’d also like to see him take some shots from outside the box. He’s got a cannon, and other than Gerrard and Agger nobody on the squad looks dangerous from distance.

Good point about shots from distance.

He has hardly taken any that I can remember this season.

I think we all expected Carroll to be the flick assist machine, but part of the problem is that he is played as a lone striker. He’d have someone running onto more of those if we played with a conventional 2 striker formation, especially with speedy Bellamy up top.
