No Way Through: Liverpool 0 - Spurs 0

There was a lot of this

While it is tempting, and certainly wouldn't be incorrect, to lament yet another draw that probably should have been a win, most supporters probably aren't quite as dejected as some other performances at home where the Reds couldn't get it up and left their companions unsatisfied and underwhelmed, wondering why we didn't choose more stout and youthful partners for the night.

Yes, Liverpool's attack was blunt and uninspiring for long stretches. But there are few teams that can boast the shield of Michael Dawson, Ledley King, and Scott Parker. There's a reason for Spurs' position in the league, and while Gareth "I like it on the ground" Bale gets a lot of the headlines, he couldn't do that without the platform that this simply magnificent trio provide. They, and the rest of the Tottenham team defended brilliantly. This was clearly their plan, what with all the injuries they're carrying. Shame they had to get it so right on this day.

Yes, you have to be able to break even the most solid of defenses down if you want to claim a spot among the league's elite. That doesn't make it acceptable, just easier to deal with. Liverpool ran out of ideas, and even a solid Plan B or C would have still crashed against the white wall that those three provided.

Of course, crossing to an actual body or getting more than one or two guys in the box might have helped.

Star-divide

Bullets:

-I don't think I can say enough about how good I thought Dawson was. While Liverpool didn't present him with myriad problems or tactics, he had an answer for everything he did see. This John Terry and England business really shouldn't be that big of a deal, because if healthy Dawson is clearly the superior player at this point in their career. Capello's problems would be even less if Ledley King weren't basically a science experiment to get on the field. Can't tell you how happy I am that he was fully operational today.

-That said, Liverpool's final ball was just horrific. That's probably not even a strong enough word. Their crossing, which eventually became the only ploy, was so wayward I thought Blind Faith was going to write a song about it. There are reasons for that.

With Enrique injured, there's little option other than to put Johnson at left back with Kelly slotting in on the right. But even though Johnson's willing to get forward on that side constantly, Kyle Walker was only happy to let him have the left foot open, which just isn't going to work. A cut back on to his right foot allowed Spurs to get into position to deal with anything that came in. Same problem for Craig Bellamy out there. When things started to bog down, even in the first half, it might not have been the worst idea to have a short stretch of Bellamy, or even Kuyt, through the middle with Carroll, with Gerrard shifting out to the right. But then that probably would have left Adam and Spearing to deal with Modric and Parker on equal terms. Though they nullified that threat with the aid of Gerrard through the middle, that still doesn't leave anyone comfortable on their own.

-Dirk Kuyt went back to being what we lament about him -- paceless, with the touch of an SUV, and unable to pick a pass. More than a few movements died with Kuyt having the ball spring into the air as if carrying Duck Dodgers of the 24th and a half century to Planet X.

-While not given much to work with, it was inventive as Andy Carroll's been. It took a pretty class tackle from Dawson to keep a very clever run from resulting in a serious chances for the big Geordie. There were some neat turns and takes as well, and he's clearly as confident as he's ever been in red. Now he could use some help and assistance.

-Steven Gerrard was seemingly everywhere in the 1st half, if only to shake the attentions of Parker. But it looked like he ran out of gas a bit in the 2nd, and that made him a little easier occupied by Parker.

-Spearing had what is probably going to be the typical Spearing match at this young age. Full of energy, some nice tackles, some over-exuberance, and a couple shaky passes resulting in giveaways. But he's getting more reserved.

-I want this whole Luis Suarez thing to be over. While I'm delighted to see him back in the team, I can't say I was too comfortable with the returning Spartan warrior reception he got from everyone. Of course I think he was treated harshly, but it seems as if a lot of people associated with the club can't understand why he was suspended at all. The best case scenario here is that he mistakenly, or awkwardly, or ignorantly insulted a fellow player due to race, and that shouldn't sit well with anyone. But I keep going back and forth on this, the whole thing just leaves me uneasy, and I'd just like it to not be a story any more. Of course, that's probably going to have to wait until after Saturday, isn't it?

-And of course, four minutes in he boots Parker in the nads. It just can't be a quiet occasion for El Pistolero, can it?

Not the worst result ever, but it makes Saturday more of a must-get-something. Four points back, three teams to leap. Daunting, but hardly impossible.

crossing

what I don’t seem to get which steve mcmanoman or whoever pointed out on the ESPN2 telecast was towards the end of the match (and for many other chances as well) did Liverpool have so few players in the box even when spurs were stacking it up in there.

seems like the whole team was fine with watching Andy trying to prove himself all by himself.

This is a recurring deficiency

It has been the story all season.

Absolutely.

I cannot count how many Bellamy, Gerrard, Downing balls have been put into the box only to see one (if any Red shirts).

Frustrating as hell.

Dawson

looked so good because he was playing against Mr. Hobnail Boots. He certainly couldn’t stay with Suarez. We were at full strength, ex Lucas, at home to a severely wounded Spurs. A tie was not acceptable. That anyone thinks it is is lamentable. Until we get that slo-mo clown with the 9 on his back off the field the team will continue to waste balls into the box.

I have not watched the whole match. But AC had another decent showing. He is not really getting the service that he requires. He also lacks support in the box.

From what I saw in the first half he had a few good opportunities, one on the turn where the defender had a good play and it appeared to me that he was fouled on the edge of the box or slightly in the box in the first half. Could have been a penalty or at least a freekick on the edge of the box.

What happened on that last second foul?

Did he touch the ball with a hand?

I don't think so

I think the ref said he was backing in.

I’m not sure if I have ever seen that called in the box. Super strange call especially at such a crucial time in the game.

I wonder

If Carroll misses these chances in practice, or if it is just the weight of the game that causes him to lose focus. The right footed effort in front of goal needs to be automatic even if it’s his off foot. You want to keep thinking that it’s just a slump that he needs to work his way through, but how much longer can that be the case?

New guy but not new fan

Come on these people that are complaining are mostly the bandwagon from 2005, I am not upset at all we are unbeaten at anfield and only got our star striker back last night, that was the first time suarez, gerrard and caroll all played together I think, we have had more games then anyone and it does not ease up at all with the manc scum approaching(my fav game of the season regardless of result). YNWA! Great piece by the way like this blog

Welcome

I think I read somewhere that AC, Luis, Stevie have logged a total of 70 mins together on the pitch before last night.

There has been little continuity among our starters with Stevie’s injuries, AC’s lack of a run of matches, Luis’s suspension, Lucas injury. Something has gotten in the way of a consistent starting XI. We also lead the league in hitting the woodwork

But the stats don’t lie, our conversion rate sucks. We have had plenty of chances that we have not taken advantage of. If we convert 3 more goals on the many attempts that we have muffed we are 9 points to the good and sitting in fourth IMHO. But the fact is that we have not. Someone has got to catch fire and start putting the ball in the back of the net, no excuses.

Yeah

true It has been poor especially against the so called small teams, though I have never seen a premier league so even and balanced (minus wigan) in my whole life, I am one of those unlucky fans that was born in the summer of our last league win and have had to deal with that a for a long time. I think honestly motivation may be an issue with some of the players that might explain some bad results against the minnows but I am not losing faith our squad is bright and young, what we need to do is forget about aimless crosses and play through balls to feet caroll actually has some skill believe it or not:)

What is scary is that the QPR’s and Swansea’s can play with the big clubs and sneak up and suprise anyone.

Our squad is on the young side for the most part, with the exception of Bellers and Gerrard most of the players are in their 20’s and should be in their prime. My frustration is with players like Charlie Adam. He is fairly reckless on the pitch and is in a completely different role than he was at Blackpool.

4th was the goal this season, we really need CL footy next year to have a shot for exceptional talent in the summer window. My hope is that not bringing anyone in the window does not bite us in the ass.

by NC Nole on Feb 7, 2012 2:31 PM GMT up reply actions

Agree

yeah totally, I did not see it coming with Swansea, QPR have ridiculous money but thats the way the game is going, I do not see it lasting though for much longer second season syndrome usually deals with these guys:)

and

Charlie adam now I did not forsee him starting this many games at all, I have admired him for a long time but never thought he end up at the pool, I was bit amazed, he clearly is off the pace, with suarez back maybe we can mix the midfield up a bit but god I wish we had bought scott parker or maybe kept on to merilies. But we have to deal with him his game is ok but I think he has given so many stupid free kicks away in dangerous places and a few penalties, need lucas back urgenty!

Only watched 1st Half

In the first half I was especially disappointed with the set peice play. I recall Bellers wasted a perfect opportunity on a free kick, also Stevie had a shot on a free kick that looked like shit.

Charlie Hollywood was up to his usual antics. For my money’s worth, we paid £20M frikin dollars for Hendo, please play him before Mr. Hollywood. I think Charlie is a squad player, good backup and give him all the cup runs and Europa if we qualify but for GOD’s sake I am over seeing him getting regular time in PL action. I recall one ball in the first half that he sent sailing into the box, with no one in there. His awareness and ability to get back and tackle on the counter sucks. Hendo at least has some promise and upside.

by NC Nole on Feb 7, 2012 1:56 PM GMT reply actions

Henderson, etc.

Henderson seems to be improving and I think his hustle fits well into a high-energy, 90-minutes-of-hell system than Adam does. My favorite lineup is Suarez, Bellamy, Kuyt, and Hendo with Gerrard to set up the plays and take set pieces in front of the holding midfielder and back 4. Don’t give the opponent any room to breathe.

by sacman701 on Feb 7, 2012 4:24 PM GMT reply actions

The cross the ball and hope that AC can bang a few goals off his head system is not working.

Henderson has tremendous upside, coming into a massive club at his young age and not slotting into the same role as he was previously in was a big change. I think Adam is cover, plain and simple. He excelled in his role at Blackpool but he was given much more latitude.

I like your idea of constant pressure, which Luis, Bellers, and Kuyt (not the most technically gifted but works his ass off) and Hendo can run the pitch with the best of them.

You left out part of the equation

by Mr. Sanchez on Feb 7, 2012 9:37 PM GMT up reply actions

It was implied...

… I’m honestly not sure whether to be encouraged or discouraged by that. I don’t think our attackers are really that far below average in true talent, so I would expect us to regress back towards the mean at some point. Then again, I’ve been waiting for that since about October. At some point it stops being bad luck.

by kindred on Feb 7, 2012 10:51 PM GMT up reply actions

You hit the nail on the head

Something just isn’t working. This should get everyone pissed off:

@OptaJoe: 42 – Man Utd have hit 42 shots fewer than Liverpool in the PL this season but have scored twice as many goals (56). Contrast.

Man U had an unbelievable conversion percentage to start the season. They’ve regressed.

And of course there it the quality of the chance created.

Bye Travis and thanks for 2010! Good luck with the Brewers!

If we were only a few goals behind them, I would buy that

But that comparison is astounding, even given United’s extreme conversion percentage at the beginning. I am not all about stats in futbol as most of you know, but when there is this big of a disparity, then it clearly points to a problem. Liverpool are tied for 12th in goals scored. Among other, Norwich, Fulham, and Villa are all ahead of us in that category.

Here is a good article that breaks down how off Liverpool are this year

Pretty sure it’s higher now.

I’d wager Downing has more woodwork strikes than some teams.

Agree

Yeah prob is it is really unlucky because hitting the woodwork normally means it was a good or great shot just inlucky if we had even buried a third of those we would be way higher
